PERMITS & REGULATIONS
WCPFC Vessels Requirements U.S. albacore vessels recently received a compliance guide from NMFS Pacific Islands Regional Office listing vessel requirements under the WCPFC fishing west of 150W in the North and South Pacific. The main item is a VMS requirement on all vessels. For a copy of the guide click: COMPLIANCE GUIDE and LETTER TO VESSELS.
NOTE on VMS This is a requirement on ALL HMS vessels fishing west of 150W in the North Pacific, and west of 130W south of 4N in the South Pacific. This is under rules of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC). For now HMS vessels east of this management area are not required to carry VMS. However, NMFS has the authority to impose it if they desire.
Note the effective date of this has been moved from February 22, 2010 to April 22, 2010
VMS Reimbursement There could be funds available through the PSMFC for VMS units up to $3,100 each. This might be especially useful if IATTC via NMFS SW Region requires it east of 150W. Downloadable Form
